Abstract

Infant mortality is one of the main public health indicators, reflecting socioeconomic conditions, access to and quality of health services, as well as the effectiveness of policies aimed at maternal and child health. This study aimed to characterize the epidemiological profile and analyze the conditions of access to health associated with infant mortality in the municipality of Araguari-MG, from 2018 to 2022. This is a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, based on secondary data from the Mortality Information System (SIM) and the Live Birth Information System (SINASC). Maternal and neonatal variables were evaluated, including age, education level, type of delivery, number of prenatal visits, birth weight, prematurity, and causes of death according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). Sixty-nine infant deaths were recorded, predominantly in the early neonatal period (56.5%). A higher frequency of deaths was observed in males, premature newborns, and those with low birth weight (<1,500 g). The main causes of death were related to perinatal conditions and congenital malformations. Despite high prenatal coverage, a high proportion of cesarean deliveries stood out. Discrepancies were also found between the records of the SIM and SINASC systems, indicating limitations in the quality of information. It is concluded that, although the municipality shows progress in maternal and child health indicators, challenges related to prematurity, the quality of perinatal care, and the reliability of epidemiological records persist, requiring integrated surveillance and care strategies to reduce preventable deaths.
