Abstract

This integrative review examines the association between social media use and mental health outcomes among adolescents, given the growing relevance of this topic in the current context. The study aims to synthesize scientific evidence on this relationship, identifying factors associated with both positive and negative impacts. A methodology based on the PRISMA guidelines was used, involving searches in recognized databases and strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, resulting in the selection of 15 studies. The results show that the relationship between social media and mental health is multifactorial and does not depend exclusively on duration of use, highlighting the importance of experiences in the digital environment. It is observed that negative interactions, such as exposure to harmful content and cyberbullying, are associated with increased anxiety, depression, loneliness, and suicidal ideation, while positive experiences may exert a protective effect. Relevant mediating factors are also identified, such as sleep quality, self-esteem, and body image, in addition to greater vulnerability among female adolescents. It is concluded that the quality of social media use has a greater influence on mental health than the amount of time spent, reinforcing the need for more context-specific approaches and strategies to promote the healthy use of these platforms.
