A Síndrome do intestino irritável associada a fatores psicoemocionais em um ambulatório no município de Araguari: um estudo quantitativo

The Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by recurrent abdominal pain associated with changes in bowel habits and frequently influenced by psychoemotional factors. This study aimed to evaluate the sociodemographic profile, psychoemotional factors, and clinical characteristics associated with IBS in patients attending an outpatient clinic in the municipality of Araguari, Minas Gerais, Brazil. This is a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach conducted at the Dr. Romes Nader Ambulatory Center between September and December 2024. Eleven volunteers aged over 18 years diagnosed with IBS participated in the study. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire including sociodemographic, clinical, and psychoemotional variables. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics with Microsoft Excel and SPSS software. The sample showed a predominance of females (90.9%), with a high frequency of recurrent abdominal pain and bowel patterns compatible with constipation (90.9%). Triggering factors were reported by 81.8% of participants, mainly diet and stress. All participants presented at least one psychological diagnosis, with psychoemotional disorders, insomnia, and high stress levels being common findings. The results highlight a strong association between emotional factors and the manifestation of IBS, reinforcing the role of the gut–brain axis in the pathophysiology of the syndrome. It is concluded that IBS has a multifactorial nature and that clinical management should involve an interdisciplinary approach, including medical, nutritional, and psychological strategies to improve symptoms and patients' quality of life.
