This study is justified by the growing demand for sustainable and innovative technologies aimed at the transformation of cities. There is an urgent need to explore new ways of leveraging existing infrastructure to develop smart municipalities. The research aims to analyze how the application of Automation, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in the urban context can contribute to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) nº 11, which is part of the United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda and aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. The methodology adopted was qualitative and involved a literature review on academic platforms such as Google Scholar, Capes, and Mendeley. Publications discussing the functionalities, benefits, and challenges of adopting digital resources in urban management were analyzed. The observed results indicate that technologies such as AI, IoT, and Big Data stand out when the topic is the optimization of natural resources, improved urban mobility, reduced bureaucracy, agility, and citizen participation. Furthermore, the importance of agile methodologies such as Scrum for the effectiveness in the elaboration and execution of projects related to the evolution of cities is highlighted. It is concluded that the integration between innovative technologies and sustainability has the potential to drive territorial growth. However, such implementations depend significantly on the financial capacity of the municipalities. Developed countries, due to their high industrialization and better quality of life, tend to structure smart cities more easily, while developing nations still face significant economic and social challenges.
