Abstract

Sexual violence against children and adolescents is a serious public health issue and a violent crime. As such, it represents a social challenge due to its consequences on quality of life and individual health, since it affects physical, emotional aspects and cognitive, psychosocial development. This study aimed to investigate reports of sexual violence committed against children and adolescents aged between 5 and 19 years in the state of Minas Gerais during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a quantitative ecological approach, secondary data from public DATASUS records were analyzed. Data filtering took into account sociodemographic variables such as age and gender, as well as the type of violence, focusing specifically on cases of sexual violence. Based on 17,837 documented reports between 2017 and 2023, a decrease in the number of notifications was observed in 2020, especially from March onwards, coinciding with the onset of social distancing measures. However, after this initial period of decline, the numbers began to rise again, resuming the upward trend observed in previous years. Furthermore, the data point to a higher prevalence of sexual violence among children aged 5 to 14, with girls being significantly more affected than boys. These findings reinforce the need for continuous monitoring and public policies aimed at protecting vulnerable populations, especially in the context of health crises.
