Prostate cancer: possible obstacles to perform the detection exam

INTRODUCTION: Digital rectal examination is a relatively low-cost preventive measure for the detection
of prostate cancer (CaP), but it is a procedure that stirs the male imagination, a point that distances
many men from preventing the disease. Keywords: prostate cancer; Men's health; religion;
embarrassment; fear; exam. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study, based on a literature review, is to
describe the factors that result in male resistance to the preventive examination for digital rectal
examination. METHODOLOGY: This is a Literature Review study. The period established for the selection
of articles was from 2011 to 2020. The following descriptors and their applications in Portuguese and
English were used for the search: "prostate cancer" AND "barriers to examination", "prostate cancer"
AND "test detection ". RESULTS: It is essential and necessary to include this topic in the discussion among
health professionals, with the involvement of managers and multidisciplinary teams, for the
effectiveness of quality treatment in the prevention of male health (TURRII and FAROI, 2018; GOMES et
al., 2015). CONCLUSION: Health education is the best way to arrive at practical data, both in terms of
prevention and treatment, showing men, with respect to uniqueness and human dignity, the importance
of care without constraints and fears. In this way, men can become autonomous and participative in the
production of their health.
