Abstract

This study is a narrative review of the literature on opioid free anesthesia (OFA) with the aim of understanding the procedure bases, in addition to its advantages and disadvantages. It is noteworthy that the topic of this review has been a subject of much debate in recent years, mainly due to the excessive use of the drug both during anesthetic processes and in the treatment of acute or chronic pain. The literature found in databases, such as PubMed and LILACS, was qualitatively studied in order to expand knowledge on the topic addressed, and, for this, the following terms were used as descriptors: "multimodal anesthesia", " opioid free anesthesia” and “opioid free anesthesia”. The results showed that it is possible to perform an efficient anesthesia with good analgesia and not inferior to anesthesia with the use of opioids. In addition, initial evidence has shown that OFA offers intra- and postoperative benefits in terms of analgesia and decreased analgesic consumption, however, there is little data on the long-term benefits of this anesthesia and further studies are needed to help structure the approach. ideal for each patient and/or surgery and thus increase the practice of OFA.
