Abstract

Benzodiazepines are the most used psychiatric drugs worldwide, having pharmacological properties with sedative, hypnotic, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant effects. However, prolonged use may be associated with dementia, especially among the elderly. To investigate the association between dementia and the prolonged use of benzodiazepines in the elderly. A bibliographic review was carried out with a narrative character of articles published in the last ten years (2013 to 2023), using the SciELO, PubMed, BVS and Google Scholar database. The study of the selected bibliographies showed that the use of benzodiazepines among the elderly has a high prevalence. In addition, this type of drugs is not recommended to be used by the elderly, worsening its consequences even more when the treatment is carried out in the long term, aggravating a set of adverse events without showing efficacy in this format of use. Most of the pharmacoepidemiological studies carried out so far have concluded that benzodiazepine users are at increased risk of developing dementia, but the mechanisms by which the increased risk of dementia in the elderly may possibly occur remains unclear. It is important to seek less harmful ways to solve complaints regarding sleep and anxiety in the elderly and to enable health professionals to identify drugs not recommended to use in the elderly and come up with ways to optimize prescriptions. Therefore, there is a need for further studies on the subject, in order to observe the possible risks that exist in the reckless use of benzodiazepines.
