Abstract

Introduction: The increase in cholesterol concentration, primarily low-density lipoprotein (LDL), is considered a potential risk for cardiovascular disease. Objective: This article aims to analyze the correlation between levels of lipoprotein cholesterol (low density) and cardiovascular events in the elderly population. Methods: Consists of an integrative literature review of published studies and indexed in the PubMed platform database, in which the inclusion criteria were articles available from the year 2018, free of charge, in English and Portuguese, and that addressed the theme of correlation between the risk of cardiovascular disease and cholesterol levels. Results and Discussion: Although some previous studies have demonstrated a relationship of up to 50% between hypercholesterolemia at the expense of LDL and coronary events, only one of the five studies analyzed demonstrated this association. The others, however, ruled out the possibility that high levels of LDL cholesterol lead to cardiovascular events in the elderly, such as coronary heart disease, heart failure and death from cardiac causes. This is related to several factors, the characteristics of cholesterol, the concentration in the vessel, as well as other morbidities that alter the vascular characteristics.  Conclusion: Other facts should be considered in the cardiovascular outcomes of the elderly, since hypercholesterolemia alone is not a risk predictor alone.
