Abstract

Vitiligo is a micropigmentation of skin tissues caused by the destruction of melanocytes, which affects approximately 1% of the world population. The etiology is unknown, but there are theories that explain the situation: immunological, cytotoxic and neural. The main evidence is related to immunological aspects. Objective: To present the pathophysiology of vitiligo and explore the response mechanism of the patient's immune system. Methodology: A bibliographic survey was carried out on SciELO, Google Scholar and Lilac's databases, between 2008-2014, with the descriptors vitiligo, treatment, diagnosis, depigmentation, melanin, autoimmune, pathophysiology, immunology and humans and, after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria 4 surveys were selected. Results: The analysis of the articles showed that the cause is mainly related to genetic, autoimmune, biochemical, viral and environmental factors. He also pointed out that 20 to 30% of patients with vitiligo have positive family occurrences for the disease. In addition, there is a relationship between skin depigmentation and the presence of specific antibodies in the blood serum, which are: thyroid peroxidase in greater prevalence than anti-nuclear antibodies. Conclusion: The most accepted cause is related to the immune response. However, there is a need to increase new articles related to pathophysiology, since the number found was scarce.
